I find it crazy that there are people out there who care about ethical repairable tech enough to invest hours and hours into Fairphone, have the know-how to hack away at Linux on mobile and develop hardware support, and nevertheless use Reddit and Twitter as the only channels to communicate this work.
I get that the Fediverse is still pretty niche by most standards, but for FOSS development it seems to be a pretty obvious meeting point.
Edit: It turns out the other FP6 hacker is also making their own non-federated Reddit alternative, which probably explains the absence from the Fediverse. 🙃

so to summarize, in increasing order:
- uses twitter (and other big tech-only platforms)
- uses grok
- wants grok on android, in an app
- has the mindset to ask elon directly in a tweet
also develops a centralized social media site, which does not even load text content without scripts and HTTP fetch requests being allowed.
so far I was thinking maybe you two could join efforts. now I understand if you don’t think that could work.

Completely off topic, but you mentioned in your post about getting the camera working that you might be working on a RISC-V phone. If that is actually happening, that’s an insta-buy for me.

I don’t want to make false promises, its been happening in the sense that I’ve been working on it but i can’t promise it gets to a physical device.
Making a good linux phone is pretty hard, being able to legally sell it after is even harder. There are so many regulations and certifications.
Yeah, and regulations across different countries has to be even more difficult. IIRC in the US, the baseband has to be proprietary, but I could be wrong on that. Are you planning on releasing the schematics and gerbers for it, and/or are you planning on selling it commercially a la the Pinephone?
I’m just looking forward to a fully functional mainline phone in general. Having it be RISC-V as well would just be a cherry on top.
If you’re looking for a fully functional phone i would recommend getting the Fairphone 6 with my image, it is almost fully functional and i will make it so in the coming days.
You can also purchase these trough my shop if you want, but the image is open source and free to download, so any fp6 will do.
And yes, if I do end up making the riscv phone (or any other hardware) everything will be open source, the hardware and the software.
Should I get to the point where i will be selling them ill probably sell them as both kit and fully build.
But one can just take the files and order the parts themselves and assemble for no cost.
I do have to say again that actually making this is still very much an unknown, the FP6 will be available much faster. But i can promise that if a catcrafts original phone will be brought out it will be fully open in all aspects to the maxium of my ability. (For example modem firmware is closed and signed so while i really want to open source it i myself don’t even have the source)
I’m in the US, so getting a non-plus FP6 might be a bit difficult, but the FP6+ was just released in the US.
How much of the FP6 mainlining work applies to the FP6+?
And good to hear about the open nature of the potential WIP RISC-V phone. I love to hear it.
