I’m a Taiwanese and interacted with a bunch of Linux users from Mainland China on Mastodon. From what I saw, I don’t think it’s as easy to use Linux in China, mainly due to the Great Firewall. They often need to tweak the mirrors and even tunnel through their VPS overseas.

I swear I’ve seen such headline for years now.

China committed to gradually shift from Windows to Linux on government computers. It will certainly take years, assuming it succeeds in the first place.

But still, good news they’re going for it. Hopefully we’ll see the year of Linux on Chinese PCs.

They pretty much did exactly that when they kicked Russians off the maintainer list and Linus was a super big ol’ dick about it too.

They’ll make using Chinese Linux a pre-crime. Mandatory Microsoft for every citizen.

User: - I wish Linux to win over Windows! evil laugh Monkey paw: - Done. China mandates Linux, US mandates Windows. Everything else is a crime punishable by death

China does a lot of things that are good and then counteracts them with bad, like monkey paw wishes. This is just another example

Some examples: China produces a huge amount of solar panels that we need for green energy. China is also building and using a ton of coal power plants, more than any other country.

China is moving away from Microsoft which will lead to decrease in Microsoft power and hopefully lead to a bunch of work on open source projects. China is also comitting genocide on the Uyghurs.

            Etc

Oh really? China doesn’t make solar panels? I could have sworn I saw ‘made in china’ on a bunch of solar panels recently, but I guess I was wrong. Thanks, I’ll make sure to report all articles on China and solar panels as fake news.

Those latter two examples seem pretty unrelated. I’m no fan of China’s government for various reasons, but them moving away from Microsoft seems like a good outcome for everyone.

You’re not using consumption adjusted emissions and are therefore accidentally saying nonsense, if you use consumption based emissions, the us is at like double… so uh no, they win there too undeniably.

Also the trajectory is better too.

i’m not saying china is great but that’s a nonsense point.

China has more coal power plants than any other country, by a huge margin. 8x more than the US. How is that nonsense?

                  For two reasons

                  1. They’re manufacturing for other countries, hence the indexed emissions I recommended. Consumption adjusted emissions tells a much more fair story, it’s easy to be zero emissions if you move all manufacturing to china.
                  2. Massive population.

It’s not a valid metric. Per thing consumed china creates way less emissions.

So China will counteract its adoption of linux by… Committing a genocide? Something doesn’t add up here.

If you want to criticize China then find something more relevant and credible than CIA propaganda.
