The USSR existed for a while after Stalin and Beria. They’ve been dead for 75 years.
It existed before them too. Hell, the entire space race happened after.
But then again if “perfectly fair socialist democracy” is being matched against a “perfectly fair capitalist democracy” then sure. It’s as absurd to apply that concept to the USSR as it would be to the USA.
But mostly people don’t view the USSR as a boogeyman anymore, so they don’t need or care for reinforcing the old Epstein class narratives.
So maybe we can all pretend it is innocent, but what you linked here just looks like the telltale sign of well known agitators on the Fediverse. There’s plenty of criticism there, although there are also some total Glazers.
What they don’t allow is thoughtless extreme criticism that isn’t based on the material world. In that very thread there are people talking about how the soviet Union declined in its later years.
If you got to lemmy.ml and make some post about the failures of leadership leading to recriminalising lgbt love and culture people will willingly discuss it. Or how there were flaws in their women’s lib attempts that lead to pay disparities and so on.
What they tend to ban is stuff like this where someone just says “instance of terrible thing, therefore whole project bad and doomed” which is a ridiculous and frustrating way to analyse anything.

Not really my experience. I think its up to the mods mood that day or if they read you as “a good socialist” thats allowed to have critiques or as a “bad socialist” that somehow isnt allowed to have critiques.

This person is trolling you. The way .ml do threads is they sealion you into cringe prolonged debates and then invent talking points to pin on you. Enable instance suffixes on your app so you can just know who you’re talking to. And don’t trust people who go “explain to me, explain to meee”. That’s not a thing human adults do.
When someone tries the sealioning trick, the correct response is always - “I think this would be more productive if you elucidate on why you feel this point needs further exploration.”

Maybe. At that point I’m usually just no longer interested in interacting. I suppose in academics it makes sense but I find any sort of competitive discussion on internet pretty pathetic. Especially when it’s about things like personally held beliefs, which is kind of a weird currency to be making bets with. And usually you’re not going to convince a random internet person to respect anything they don’t already hold by default because they are playing out a personal fantasy of some kind. “Changing my mind when presented with compelling info” isn’t really a fantasy master-debate bros really have.
Obviously there’s exceptions but most people aren’t online doing this “joust with me in front of a crowd” bit because they have the social skills to interact with strangers irl.
