So instead allow Cloudflare to take over the Internet? I do not consider this an improvement.
Yea I agree it is a double-edged sword and centralizing everything is not good, as it knocks out half or more of the public-facing sites and services if there’s disruption. But the skids and bots are out numbering legitimate people and as sad as it is to say, Cloudflare is probably the best service to safeguard yourself and they’re the least evil of all Big Tech. We’re living in dystopian times.
It’s fundamentally not possible. The honor system does not work if the reward for breaching it is larger than the gain from your honor.
The only plausible solution is making access more expensive.
Edit: Or, more accurately making each access profitable. And that is unlikely as there is no infrastructure to charge a webuser for accessing a site.
We tried a service that’d throw a 402. Think it was called Tollbit. Didn’t work.
