Hot take; fleabag was mediocre at best
The best TV show IN ENGLISH… plenty of better TV show in other languages… just saying.
Insane list. Look at the IMDB Top 250 filtered by “after 2000” and you’ll notice the obvious omissions:
- Avatar: The Last Airbender at number 6
- Attack on Titan at number 16
- Firefly at number 39
- Taskmaster at number 43
These are just a couple examples in different categories. Anime fans immediately noticed that no anime made the list at all, despite 10 being in the IMDB top 100. Western animation fans might have seen that Bojack Horseman made the list, but Avatar didn’t (or if the editor filtered for “adult animation”, Rick and Morty (#22) didn’t). There’s really no excuse for these, there is no consistent rule that would exclude any of these shows. NYT readers must live in the dark timeline where fun is outlawed and Taskmaster was cancelled after one series.
So, so many poorly placed on the list. Band of Brothers is my personal number 1, but I’d accept it anywhere in the top 5; begrudgingly accept it in the top 10. But 28? GTFO.
Silo? From? Severance?
Severance made their list.
Who made this list lol. Shit shows are high ranked, good shows low ranked. Makes no sense.
I’d assume that it’s based on some form of measure. How many times streamed, average episode rating, how many streaming/hosting licenses were purchased, etc etc.
I can absolutely see how a show without much narrative complexity but is delightful ‘popcorn’ to second-screen watch after a long day could perform well. It’s all in which metrics were used and how they were weighted.
I also think they only checked certain streaming services, but not all. Because there are some very good shows missing. And also many older shows are missing. At least Six Feet Under made the list, as an older show. But it shouldn’t be so low on the list. Especially when you see the other shows above it. It makes no sense.
Also I didn’t see Utopia (UK), The Expanse, Silo and Shrinking, which are really good. The Expanse is seen as the best scifi ever made. How can it be missing from the list.
Then they added Black Mirror, low on the list, without specifying seasons or UK and US as with other shows. The first UK seasons should have been at least in the top 10.
Typical NYT list, lots of filler series. But where the fuck is 24?

It’s really weird that basically nothing made out of the anglosphere is there. Squid game got squeezed in, but not a single anime for example is really weird. There is stuff like AoT and Death Note and neither is on there.
It’s completely US-centered with a couple of British shows sprinkled on top. Even if your focus was just the anglosphere, UK TV punches way above its weight.
It’s funny how many British shows run for 8 episodes and an ending, then gets remade in America with 8 seasons
Office UK is better than Office US.

I don’t watch a lot of TV, and this list proves it lol. I think I counted 10 or less, maybe 15.

I’m so far behind on that show, like probably 10+ seasons behind. I got tired of it after a certain point. I feel like I’m not alone.
Oh ya sunny is the utmost sit com. The characters don’t change and stay the same, they don’t learn and have nothing to say. I think that’s why they have so much staying power.
