Quite literally a huge mistake on my part. I was looking for advice on how to attend medical school in Cuba, any age limits for self financed students, what requirements I need grade wise, etc.
Instead, when I clicked on the Reddit link, I got people talking about how people needed to bring their own gauze for surgery, the doctors there are incompetent, and the hospitals lack resources. The lack of resources was blamed on the healthcare system and the country rather than the embargo.
Next time I just need to email CubaHeal because that was so disheartening to read.
Just don’t go to Reddit for anything concerning actual political class consciousness, the only few I know of that are explicitly very good is r/MovingToNorthKorea… and I really remember there being an equivalent with Cuba but I forgot it possibly. Regardless, Reddit is too centralized amid capitalist society and you’re more than likely to encounter actual Langleys than people.
For every country, there’s a neocon subreddit (generally the biggest one), a more progressive subreddit and a leftist/radical subreddit. I remember Lebanon subreddit was full of zios, while the Lebanese subreddit was more progressive and critical of Israel. Argentina is the same, with r/argentina being a cess pit, while RepublicaArgentina was more progressive. Canada is the same, with canada and canadian being cesspits, onguardforthee more liberal/progressive, and canadaleft more based (still a little bit socdemy for my tastes). Brasil has brasil, as progressive, brasillivre as a reactionary cess pool, and BrasildoB as leftist. So always browse the community a little bit to understand where it is standing.
English speakers from anywhere outside of the imperial core are generally privileged people. They’re the ones that have been able to afford an expensive education that taught them English.
The vast majority of working class people have got work to do, bills to pay and people to socialize with and they do not argue on reddit in English with CIA funded bot accounts.
Jeez, sounds like a tough crowd
Solidarity orgs or ELAM(https://instituciones.sld.cu/elam/) may also be a good place that may answer that question.
Lots of people from the USA have graduated in Cuba through ELAM -> https://cuba-solidarity.org.uk/news/article/3452/cuba-has-graduated-170-doctors-from-the-united-states
Regarding that subreddit, yeah, you will never find good info there. Now, it is even worse because the US is tuning the war drums
I worry that I’m too old to attend ELAM, as I am now over the age of 25. But I’ll keep an open mind!
Give it a try! You will never know unless you give it a shot.
If you’re American, you apply to ELAM through the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (the official USA-Cuba liaison organization for this program, led by Claudia De la Cruz from PSL) here: https://ifconews.org/elam
I’ve made an earlier post with more info on ELAM: https://lemmygrad.ml/post/5868962
Best of luck to your application! If you get in, you gotta post to show us everything inside Cuba.
I appreciate the rec but I’m too old to attend ELAM, you have to be between 18-25 apparently, and I am not American. Although CubaHeal seems like the place to contact for Canadians to attend med school in Cuba.
sometimes there are diaspora individuals still in the country because they cant afford to move to the USA
bleak but real
That is…hard
