“During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week. If this rate of decline continues, current trends would suggest that total DAUqs [or daily active unique users] could fall in Q4, by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million DAUqs,” Huffman wrote.
Weird that not allowing people to use your site would lower the number of people using your site.
And I’m moving to an always logged out experience.
Anyone who still has an account there, I’d encourage you to use it to gently promote your favourite Fediverse website. There are a significant number of people asking about Reddit alternatives the last couple of days, and sending people directly to a specific suggested site (rather than just saying something like “Lemmy”) is more likely to get people to come over and check things out.
It’s a shame there’s not some big social engagement event going on here right now. Anyone want to start some kind of viral shitpostery?
What’s great with incompetent parasites is they do exactly what people predicted they would do years ago.
They saw Discord and thought it’s a great idea?
So, like faceburp
Fuck /u/spez
Greedy little fuckboy

I legitimately almost as excited for the spez downfall arc as I am for Trump’s.

When I stopped using reddit a few years ago, I left my account intact because I had 18 years of posts that included a lot of tech help and other useful information that I figured people might stumble across.
Last night, I used Redact to scramble all 5,521 comments.
Scrambling is easy detect. But if you edit the posts slightly to be wrong and useless, that is much harder to restore if you do it slowly (if you do it in batch they can easily see that all edits happened close to eachother. If it looks natural then they would need to start being paranoid about all edits).
I’m not sure how good something like this would be to do in big picture, but as its evident they are going to gatekeep ALL information at somepoint, they should be denied to it.
There should be a volunteer group you could give your reddit account to that would do as much damage to spezs shitty site as possible with it.
There should be a volunteer group you could give your reddit account to that would do as much damage to spezs shitty site as possible with it.
I mean any solution that edits a comment every 4 seconds for 13 hours straight is bound to raise a red flag.
I figure it’s better than nothing. Besides, I still have control of my account and can run it again if they try bringing comments back.
Make sure to keep the account and check in after a few days, then weeks, then months and delete again if needed. When i left reddit i had found them restore about a third of my content about a month later, sneaky fucks. But since my last check, all remain wiped.
Sorting by top of all time in any subreddit shows the scars from all this nonsense. I used to have a top post in the WarThunder subreddit, now it’s just a burning memory.
I made the discussion threads for a few shows in their early seasons from around 2010. There wasn’t automation to do it back then.
I’d imagine that that probably increases the magnitude of the effect I mentioned in another news article that I linked to here in another comment, where Google users are just using Google’s Gemini LLM rather than searching for information on Reddit. Google will already have incorporated that information into its training corpus for Gemini back when it paid Reddit for access to it, so it makes the LLM the only route for a user to get access to that knowledge.
(Not criticizing your move, just commenting on what I imagine the broader impact will be, particularly if the “logged-in only” move increases the rate of other people wiping their posts and comments as well.)
Since it’s scrambled and not deleted, hopefully future model updates will replace the original data.
But yes,it’s all a bit futile.
My guess—and I’m not privy to any inside information here—is that operations at places that are building neural-net-based models look something like this:
-
“Harvest” people are responsible for obtaining data and as much associated information as possible, stuff like where data was obtained from, timestamps, any identity information, etc (handle “X” on platform “Y”). If a comment or webpage or whatever gets revised, maybe they keep multiple copies. They’ll avoid things like following infinite loops on websites, deal with corrupt archives, all that. That probably goes into some giant database. Maybe some of these guys buy access, like Google did with Reddit. A lot are just going to write spiders, scraping bots, whatever. A search engine fundamentally has to have a spider slurp down data to create its index to work at all, so I’m sure that Google is going to have a bunch of expertise in this area, built up over many years. They’ll probably retain this data in pretty raw, unprocessed form.
-
“Unification” people are going to work on the above. They write code to convert the above into a standardized-across-all-platforms format. Maybe they convert stuff to unify timezones or time formats on comments. Maybe they strip off formatting stuff added by particular platforms. Markdown or HTML titles, or titles in Microsoft Word documents, for example, probably wind up represented in one way. Where possible, maybe usernames get attached, if data is from a forum.
-
“Scoring” people work on the unified dataset. They are going to be developing some system—and there might be a number of parallel projects—for generating a score of various sorts that might be a useful value for either a model or training information. With this as well, search engines have to do this; Google’s PageRank, for example, tries to assess the “value” of a page, determine what’s most-useful and reliable information, so that it can order results (and maybe blacklist some). A lot of what search engines do isn’t just getting you hits, but putting the most-valuable ones at the top. If you can develop heuristics to rank information based on reliability or political position or any number of other things, those are going to be useful numbers.
-
“Pruning” people use information, probably including the “scoring” information, to winnow down the size of the data, eliminate data where the cost of inclusion in the training set—it’s costly to train a neural net, and reducing the size of the training corpus reduces that cost—outweighs the benefits. They probably try to cut out garbage, irrelevant binary data, poisoned data, duplicate data, misinformation, whatever.
-
“Training” people are going to do the training and probably develop systems for rating the value of the above “scores” in producing desirable output. Maybe some “scoring” heuristic is really super-useful in producing accurate and useful output as defined by some benchmark that these guys set up. Like maybe, oh, one “score” is based on whether information was obtained from a .gov TLD, or another whether a text classifier says that the language is English and the Lix school year readability is above a certain level. Could be many of these. Some of what these guys find may go back to the “scoring” guys in trying to guess what heuristics should be further developed (“known time of domain age to time content was initially spidered is particularly valuable in identifying SEO-generated spam website content; see if you can produce more scores that identify mass-created spam websites”), some to the “pruning” guys to increase the low-value data that they prune out, and some of what they find may go into weighting importance of text for the training process. Some may even go all the way back to the “harvest” guys to determine how frequently to spider data from a given source—Google doesn’t respider information at a fixed rate, but hits “valuable” sources, like major news sites, very frequently. For non-pure-LLM neural nets—I don’t know if Google is doing this yet with Gemini, but I’d imagine that eventually, probably more-advanced AIs will need to move past just being an LLM—this might also be an input used in making a decision at runtime.
There are probably going to be a lot of points in this process where not-valuable data gets identified and removed or deprioritized. Even if no engineer at somewhere like Google has tried to write a “scoring” heuristic to identify text specifically to identify output from a tool that mass-edits comments on Reddit, my guess is that text consisting of nonsense words, which is what some of the Reddit mass-comment-editing-tools I’ve seen insert, probably intrinsically get identified as part of that process by multiple classification tools that generate heuristic scores. If all of a user’s comments look like the output of some simple text generation tool, or if all of them change in a given short period, that’s probably kind of a big red flag. That does mean that the information won’t be in the output model, but I think that people who are aiming to poison LLMs during training probably are expecting more impact from putting nonsense in their comment versus just blanking the comments than they’ll likely have. Google—and more broadly, people who are running search engines and even more, building neural nets trained on data on the Internet—are just going to have to already have a lot of fairly-sophisticated work in place to assess the value of and filter their inputs.
Well next time I’ll use a time machine and go back to 2007 to tell myself to stay on digg lol.
I guess the next step is to use a tool that poisons the old comments with incorrect information.

Yah at this point its all already in their models sadly, at least anything that was posted historically.
Evidently spez restores deleted comments from backup
That’s why I didn’t delete them.
Unfortunately, they absolutely can see edits and restore them if they wanted to anyway.
Smarter than I. I scrambled them first, then deleted. Used the blackmail guy too. I did it all wrong. Now all my accounts are banned and I can’t do shit about it.
Redact is owned by a real piece of shit that holds onto that information for potential blackmail. FYI.
Velma, I believe you, but are there other sites you can recommend? Also, I couldn’t find any news on this.
Here’s an older Lemmy thread about Redact
Here’s a more in depth look at who Dan Saltman is:
Dan Saltman is a tech entrepreneur and political podcaster who leverages his platform to advance Zionist interests, targeting pro-Palestine voices and justifying Israel’s ongoing settler-colonial project in occupied Palestine.
As founder of TinyChat — a video chat platform acquired in 2014 after receiving $1.5 million in funding from Sean “Diddy” Combs, amid allegations of its use in predatory behavior — Saltman built his career in online communications. He now serves as CEO of Redact.dev, a service that deletes users’ digital footprints, which he promotes amid his own involvement in online activism. Saltman co-hosts the “Anything Else” podcast with Steven Bonnell II (Destiny), where he discusses politics and amplifies pro-Israel views to Western audiences.
Saltman has repeatedly portrayed pro-Palestine advocacy as support for terrorism, directly accusing streamer Hasan Piker of promoting “terrorist propaganda” and “Hamas recruitment videos.” In September 2025, he endorsed calls to ban Piker from Twitch, claiming Piker’s content encourages violence and supports terrorist organizations, while framing criticism of Israel as antisemitism. This rhetoric dehumanizes Palestinians by equating their resistance to Israel’s occupation with inherent threats, perpetuating consent for settler violence.
Saltman orchestrated a widespread disinformation campaign against Twitch, accusing the platform of fostering antisemitism by allowing pro-Palestine speech. He mobilized supporters to pressure advertisers, leading to temporary pauses in spending by companies like JPMorgan and AT&T in late 2024. This effort aimed to suppress voices critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza, where the confirmed death toll exceeds 40,000 — a conservative estimate, as Israel’s destruction of infrastructure and targeting of journalists has halted accurate counting, with the actual number slaughtered well into the hundreds of thousands. Saltman’s actions align with broader Zionist efforts to weaponize antisemitism accusations against dissent, shielding Israel from scrutiny over its apartheid policies and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and Gaza.
His associations extend to content creators like Ethan and Hila Klein of the H3 Podcast and Destiny’s community, with whom he has collaborated on attacks against Piker, viewing him as a threat due to his effective advocacy for Palestinian liberation. Saltman’s push to repeal Section 230 appears motivated by a desire to further censor online criticism of Israel. Twitch banned him indefinitely in November 2024 for “extreme harassment,” including doxxing and targeting employees who refused to comply with his demands.
This pattern of behavior is not isolated but part of a consistent effort to normalize Israel’s settler-colonialism, obscure Palestinian suffering under occupation and genocide, and manufacture public consent for ongoing violence.
Some additional info on the type of harassment campaigns that Dan Saltman engages in.
App claims it’s stored locally, so I don’t know.
Any source on the blackmail claim?
Ereddicate is the FOSS option, but reddit broke it permanently a year ago.
Jeeez, I was thinking about using them to scramble my Meta accounts, thanks for the info!
No problem! It can be hard to keep track of everyone behind the scenes, so to speak.
Whelp, glad I didn’t give him any money then.
I did 😭
I envy you. I was a little too outspoken which led to my account being banned, and now I can’t do anything about my existing trove of data I foolishly created for them
In other news, Reddit stock is down a whopping 28% today.
Fixing all of your problems by replacing them with new and much worse ones
It’s super funny to me. They’re so greedy to keep our content that we gave them for free, that they’re going to commit a slow digg.
Please do. It sounds like the perfect plan for reddit to finally sink to complete irrelevance.
i have moved to reddit-free experience
Haha!
What is a Reddit? /s
It’s some kind of Digg where the power users where replaced by the crazy mods. Same thing in the end actually.
Now you have me wondering if my slashdot account still works.
