Ah yes, let’s apply punishment to the symptom instead of looking for and addressing any root cause issues that are causing this shit.
Side note: if any Swedes here want to share some insight and nuance into what’s going on up there and how it got to this point, I’d be very interested to hear.
It’s the right wing party Sweden Democrats “Sverigedemokraterna” that has pushed this through to the goverment in their attempt to quell the gang violence and the gangs recruitment of young people. The gangs uses young teenagers to do their murders for them since the current law in Sweden says that you can’t prosecute teenagers under the age of 18.
This shit is insane if you ask me and I hope the current right wing block gets voted out this fall.
Don’t the swedes see prison as a means of rehabilitation? If so, this could be a legal way of getting them away from danger and out of future trouble.
The right-wing that is currently in power doesn’t really see it that way, unfortunately.
The main problem is that we haven’t even the capacity for rehabilitating adult criminals now, and no facility or established rehabilitation for the young ones. If we want young criminals incarcerated, we need a solid system that doesn’t break them even further.
That goes against well documented psychology and physiological development research.
