Smart home only makes sense if you run everything in the home, under your own control. Any cloud-dependent device will one day be worthless scrap when the company stops providing their service.
I’ve seen so many people be super happy about their stuff, then poof… updates and nothing works. all has to be replaced.
no thanks
The subscription mentality will eventually kill all of “big tech”.
hopefully…
Because of the same reason AI will fail miserably. The big companies want to sell us products that only work on their “ecosystem”… IE they want us to rent rather than own, but without saying it out in the clear.
You “own” you lock, but keep paying for their convenient app so they can tell home depot when your period starts, when you wakeup, how hot you like your house, how brown your skin color is etc. Beg them to let you out or into your home with the simple press of a button on “your” phone that you “own”
Instead they should have encouraged Linux podman or docker container selfhostable server apps. But nah!
It isn’t just the anti-competitive walled gardens they all create. It’s also that our governments have completely abandoned their purpose and any semblance of opposition to corporate criminals.
They’re all free to plan obsolescence, bait and switch, enshittify, stop updating everything, or simply kill all software, firmware, and services at will for any reason. There are dozens of things that could have been done to prevent all their crimes… but again… we love in capitalist dictatorships that only exist to empower and protect capital.
I once bought a home security setup from a famous four-letter brand. After five years, the base station to which the cameras connected received and update. After it rebooted, it didn’t recognize four of the cameras and told me I should just get newer ones, because that kind of thing happens with older models.
And that is when the Smart Home bubble popped at manxu’s Newly Dumb Home. Very open to open source connectivity, the functionality was great, but I am never again buying into a closed ecosystem.
I have openclaw controlling HA and it’s a FAR better experience. Their software is mostly garbage.
