Unfortunately, this movie was produced by Annapurna pictures, a company owned by Megan Ellison, daughter of sixth richest man in the world, David Ellison. The Ellison family is one of the foremost supporters of the Zionist project and have contributed directly to the oppression and genocide of Palestinians.

No matter how leftist and Marxist the movie is, nothing can justify collaborating with such people in any capacity.

from an interview with Boots Riley which mentions that:

      from https://portside.org/2026-05-26/boots-riley-theft-not-outside-capitalism-its-what-it-was-built

It’s perhaps why he has drawn criticism for collaborating with Annapurna Pictures, the boutique production company run by Megan Ellison, daughter of the Oracle founder Larry Ellison, a major donor to pro-Israel causes whose wealth and influence over American media have expanded amid the consolidation of tech and political power. Of course, Riley is quick to clarify the relationship: Annapurna acquired Sorry to Bother You after its 2018 Sundance premiere, and he separately developed I Love Boosters under a deal at the company before the project was ultimately picked up and financed by Neon. “Annapurna may have boosted the signal, but that’s the extent of the connection there,” he says.

As for the Ellison name, Riley adds: “The only thing Megan has ever said in relation to that is: ‘I just want you to know I’m not my father.’ But it’s interesting that it’s such an issue when BlackRock and Vanguard – major shareholders in Disney and Netflix, as well as Regal, Cinemark and AMC – also give billions upon billions to Israel. So I get the critique, unless you’re saying: don’t make a movie, don’t show it in theaters, because they get 50% of the income. Even if you make an independent movie, you’re still in this business. It’s really a liberal critique.”

I have read this response from Boots, but I don-t find it very convincing personally. Per his point on Megan-s relation to her father, Larry Ellison stepped in to directly manage the company in 2018 due to financial trouble, and also provided the financial backing to get it off the ground in the first place. Sure she isn’t her father, but she will take his money and help with running her business.

Idk maybe I really am naive and being undisciplined, but something just does not sit right with me with the argument, “I have to make art that goes towards funding zionism in some way because there is no alternative.”

Yeah, I’m also dubious, but it isn’t clear to me if she and her company are themselves actually funding zionist projects or if she merely received nepo money from her dad who is.

Fwiw a decade ago she also executive-produced the Israeli film Death in the Terminal about the lynching of an Eritrean refugee. 🤔

David Ellison is her brother, btw; their dad is Larry Ellison.
