And the desire not to vote is a human problem, far from uniquely American. Denial and dissociation are how people get through lots of life, if my own experience as well as conversations with Russian and Chinese friends are any indicator. And the reason that the wealthy foreigners come here is that the U.S. has been the current center of economic power. They would have gone to London in the 19th century.

And, for the record, I don’t actually expect that non-wealthy South Africans can do anything about Musk, but then, neither can non-wealthy Americans.

No, I’m cranky from people upthread putting all of the responsibility on us, when their countries ain’t so sweet and innocent. There’s a line a kilometer wide in fluorescent yellow between the 9/11 attacks back to U.S. imperialism, for instance, but Britain, Netherlands, Germany, and Russia all had their own brands of imperialism which are far more responsible for raising up those men to wealth. This is more a problem of class than nationality.

Huge chunks of our problems are Rupert Murdoch (Australia), Leon Musk (South Africa), Peter Thiel (Germany), Congress (Israel), and the POTUS (Russia). Maybe the rest of the world can not bother with America’s problems, but deal with the ones you’ve sent us?

I think that you are correct, as building a coalition outside of the now-thoroughly-broken system is a heavy lift. But dammit, what would we be if we don’t at least try?

As an American, I believe that we need to come together ASAP and form a police task force to remove the regime by legitimate, democratic means. It’s called its shots: The regime has said that it intends to eliminate 100 million Americans.

I see that I am not mistaken, as you have just proved by lashing out based on clearly faulty assumptions about me. I am telling you how your words may appear to others. Did you see the rhetoric about deporting over a quarter of the population of the United States? I think they won’t mind exterminating us, instead. (It’s just that MAGA cultists are so brainwashed that they think it won’t include them personally.)

If it’s a warning, and you’re actually trying to rally people, it doesn’t help to be snotty.

So, what’s the point here? Whatever the evils of the US in the past, this is nonetheless a dangerous and frightening escalation, smashing a fragile world order. This message of, “oh, this is nothing new, the US has always been evil” comes across as a resounding call to complacency, and is a rhetorical technique widely used by the fascists.
