Working as intended. The fact they are making news about this makes me feel confident of GrapheneOS.
I’ll take Graphene way more seriously when it takes the theeat model seriously and uses the distress code to quietly wipe the phone in the background
Instead of making a big splash screen so even Officer Bullethead groks what’s up
I’m not an Android user but wouldn’t it be easy to just have it mount some other volumes on the filesystem when the duress passcode is entered? In Linux land I’m thinking of
/home/<username>but there are probably far more paths to mount. This
And along with wiping the private data on the old volume, the new “duress” one should plausibly look like a boring user’s actual phone-- slop family pics, Facebook, etc
His argument should be that nothing was on his phone and he was repeatedly asking for a lawyer so he could make sure it wasn’t illegal to give out the PIN intended to be given when the user is under duress. To be fair, the guy was begging to be informed of what rights he had, he couldn’t leave, and people with guns had him in a room and kept insisting he was a criminal.
Yeah. That’s the issue. If you feel confident in arguing legality because you “know your rights” that’s often a bad card to play. Remaining calm and only saying “I can’t speak until I have my lawyer present” is all you need to know. Don’t try to argue your rights beyond that. You can easily give them evidence to use against you just by explaining the situation. That’s what they want. They want you to talk. Don’t talk. They will hold you and lie to you. It’s a game to them. It’s not for you. Shut the fuck up.
They aren’t going to suddenly go “aw, man you’re right. You defeated me with facts and logic”. They will cherry pick anything you say. SHUT THE FUCK UP.
They won’t “let you go if you just explain it”. They’ll tell you “you don’t need a lawyer because this isn’t a big deal.” They are lying. If it wasn’t a big deal they’d let you go. SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Oh I totally agree, I’m referencing what I believe his court argument should be. When being interrogated for entrance back to your home country, nothing should need to be said beyond ‘I’m a citizen here, this is my passport’.
