In my own lifetime, the summer highs have increased 20⁰F (mid 70’s -> mid 90’s) in 20 years. When I point this out to people and extrapolate a linear trend, another 20⁰ in 20 years, I get told I’m an insane doomer conspiracy theorist. Especially when I point out that another 10 degrees for a few weeks is all it takes to flash fry crops.
Yet these same people have been bitching nonstop about how hot it is this year. Yet apparently, I’m the crazy one. 🤪
Funny thing is that in my mind, I’m still presenting these people with a weenie hut jr vision of the future. As we all know, this heating trend is actually exponential, not linear.
It’s not linear. It’s exponential.
Shouldn’t have stopped reading at “actually”.
The data above says it’s 0.55 degrees C over the last 20 years. Not that I’m trying to downplay it. A couple degrees is all it takes to cause massive disruptions.
Average. Where they are, it could be more significant.
Exponential change is exponential…
shocking…
It’s been 100 degrees for days on end here. When do we start living underground? I don’t want to live in hot miserable world for the rest of my life… HELP!!!
Take off your clothes and come in it. The water is 104F.
Best we can do is pretend it’s not happening and accelerate it.
Best I can do is paper straws
It feels like sometimes we fail to comnunicate that while climate models are extremely rigorous and meticulously put together, there’s always the possibility of unknown factors.
I appreciate scientists aversion to alarmism, and the difficulty of balancing effective communication on the topic. But if we’re honest our species has been dicking around with the most complex system we know of. Even if we start doing everything right there are certainly any number of surprises lurking that we will need to deal with. And to some degree guessing at the scope of the unknown is impossible.
Can someone tell me I’m wrong and somehow we know where all the environmental landmines are? Cause I want to believe that the “this much inventment and change equals this much less warming” can be relied upon, but I worry it’s tempering the apparent scale of the crisis.
It’s fossil fuels. Something like a 100 million barrels of oil a day.
But people blame the cows. LMAO
Needs more clean coal
/s
how else are we going to get hydrogen fuel
Oops.
Don’t they do this every week at this point?
That tends to happen with exponential acceleration.
I remember the “micro ice age” in the 70’s. No one knows anything, core samples have shown the Earth has been way hotter. And somehow the glaciers melted w/ no human intervention. Its all BS
