I hope BBC is a credible source because I read it all the time.
Gabriel Rockhill: Imperialist Propaganda and the Ideology of the Western Left Intelligentsia: From Anticommunism and Identity Politics to Democratic Illusions and Fascism
The CIA has also been deeply involved in the art world. For instance, it promoted U.S. American art, particularly Abstract Expressionism and the New York art scene, over and against Socialist Realism. It funded art exhibits, musical and theatrical performances, international art festivals, and more in a bid to disseminate what was touted as the free art of the West. The Company has worked closely with major art institutions in these endeavors. To take but a single telling example, one of the major CIA officers involved in the cultural cold war, Thomas W. Braden, was the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) executive secretary before joining the Agency. MoMA’s presidents have included Nelson Rockefeller, who became the super-coordinator for clandestine intelligence operations and allowed the Rockefeller Fund to be used as a conduit for CIA money. Among MoMA’s directors, we find René d’Harnoncourt, who had worked for Rockefeller’s wartime intelligence agency for Latin America. John Hay Whitney of the eponymous museum and Julius Fleischmann sat on MoMA’s board of trustees. The former had worked for the CIA’s predecessor organization, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and allowed his charity to be used as a conduit for CIA money. The latter served as the president of the CIA’s Farfield Foundation. William S. Paley, the president of CBS and one of the major figures in U.S. psychological warfare programs, including those of the CIA, was on the members’ board of MoMA’s International Program. As this web of relations indicates, the capitalist ruling class works closely with the U.S. national security state in order to tightly control the cultural apparatus.
Many books have been written on the U.S. state’s involvement with the entertainment industry. Matthew Alford and Tom Secker have documented that the Department of Defense has been involved in supporting—with complete and absolute censorship rights—a minimum of 814 movies, with the CIA clocking in at a minimum of 37 and the FBI 22. Regarding TV shows, some of which have been very long running, the Department of Defense totals 1,133, the CIA 22, and the FBI 10. Above and beyond these quantifiable cases, there is, of course, the qualitative relationship between the national security state and Tinseltown. John Rizzo explained as much in 2014: “The CIA has long had a special relationship with the entertainment industry, devoting considerable attention to fostering relationships with Hollywood movers and shakers—studio executives, producers, directors, big-name actors.” Having served as the Deputy Counsel or Acting General Counsel of the CIA for the first nine years of the war on terror, during which time he was intimately involved in overseeing the global rendition, torture, and drone-assassination programs, Rizzo was well placed to understand how the culture industry could provide cover for imperial butchery.
These activities and many more reveal one of the primary features of the U.S. empire: it is a veritable empire of spectacles. One of its principal focal points has been the war for hearts and minds. To this end, it has established an expansive global infrastructure in order to engage in international psychological warfare. The near absolute control it exercises over mainstream media has been clearly visible in the recent drive to garner support for the U.S. proxy war against Russia in Ukraine. The same is true for its virulent 24/7 anti-China propaganda. Nevertheless, thanks to the work of so many valiant activists and the fact that it is working against reality itself, the empire of spectacles is incapable of completely controlling the narrative.
This is a better source. Thank you. This post was sparked by a YouTube short I saw and I had to do a Google search to verify it. Unfortunately, BBC was the top result and a mistake.i should have dug deeper.
Edit: I don’t think it is possible for them to have full control only influence.
Didn’t read the article:
“I hope BBC is a credible source because I read it all the time.”
BBC are whitewashing Israel’s genocide, and agreeing with the Epstein Uckers on all major points, while not giving you the other hidden side of the debate, or show you criticism of their own work. They will write what they are told, and what they are told is from the rich ps*chopath class…
There is no credible British news outlet, but that also goes for the rest of the Western for-profit media (all owned by the Epstein Class and will peddle anything for money !!) All of them have a pattern of mixing deliberate lies with hints of real news, bc they can’t post propaganda all the time without too many people noticing it. (although they are pushing it far, right now after many years of global chaos and the Epstein shtters narrative about other nations). British outlets are heavily controlled. So are US and all other large media outlet from the west, so you won’t ever get the real truth from them - even when they are not paid for a specific narrative. There is no “journalism” in the western US dominated information sphere anymore. Oh, and even wikipedia, and social networks are compromised by the rich and powerful pschos ! So even here at Lemmy, we get spammed by propaganda articles from these outlets… (‘The Guardian’ is weirdly enough, still considered a ‘rebellious leftie’ outlet, although they never were)
I recommend finding smaller independent journalist teams that have a small site, a video channel. and are focused on all/selected shit that BBC and western media ignores, or lies about… Fair warning: If you have mind-melted with msm for a long time, you won’t like what the independent journalists say at first, but rather quickly you start wondering about the questions and points that the msm never asks… Go for it…
So, BBCs article was the first that popped up. But the reason for this post was because I saw a YouTube short where someone explained that the CIA used abstract expressionism to fuel propaganda that is anti-communist and that helped the US win the Cold war. IMO I don’t think either side won that war from what I read. Anyway, I needed link to support my claim and BBC was the top result. I may have made a mistake but there are dozens of sources on this that I could have probably used if I just went down the pages in the Google search.
The US won the Cold War?
From what I read, and In my perspective, I don’t think either side really “won” that war. Just that the US had a better outcome.
I mean, their main rival the Soviet Union doesn’t even exist anymore so most people chalk that up as a win, yes. Obviously you can argue about how the US is doing currently, or that their main rival just shifted over to China, or whatever you want really. But when most people think of “the Cold War” it was between the US and the USSR and currently only one of those remains standing
in 2016, Russia, the successor state to the USSR, under the direction of its president, a former KGB agent, through a campaign of propaganda targeted at the American public, managed to install their agent into the presidency of the US, which did massive harm to the US economy, government institutions, and social cohesion and stability. to me that sounds like Cold War actors achieving Cold War goals through Cold War means
if Putin doesn’t think the Cold War is over, then it’s not over
Its adorable when you guys with your movie plot theories try to explain the workings of geopolitics to communists
The most american president ever to america, supported by the american ruling class: actually an agent of our enemy!
we’re seriously still denying Russian interference in the 2016 election? Trump’s own FBI confirmed it
I’m aware of Putin’s existence, history, and practices. I’m also aware that a lot in the world changed in the 25 years between 1991 and 2016. I’d be willing to hear an argument that Putin is trying to start Cold War 2, there’s some truth to that. But the first one? The consensus amongst most of the world is that it’s over and the US won. One man’s amition or opinion does not undo history, no matter what position he holds
Yes through ARPAC right
Realistically, the Soviet leadership crashed the system.
The Afghan War was supposed to be a walkover. Turned into a quagmire. They couldn’t get rid of Poland’s Solidarity Union, or Pope John Paul II.
Three leaders died during Reagan’s term.
Chernobyl was another sign that the entire architecture was getting ready to collapse.
Gorbachev tried to modernize the bureaucracy, but oldtimers who’d been holding onto power for decades weren’t going to give up without a fight.
Plenty of americans will claim that Reagan destroyed the USSR, but that’s just propaganda they’ve chosen to swallow.
