I remember when American Idol came out - far less trashy than reality shows, though still not my thing. I was in middle school and when the topic came up, the people who said they watched it “watched ironically,” that they don’t really care, they just “like to make fun of the bad singers.”

I would think, “But that’s worse than watching it sincerely. That’s just being a jerk.” I felt bad for the people who got embarrassed on national TV, the idea of watching a show just to laugh at someone is so mean-spirited.

Yeh i agree. I feel like it has evolved and the newer argument is the contestants know what they are getting into, and honesty some are good looking but the vanity combined with the lean into judgment just feels unhuman to me.

Even moderate shows, i liked the Great British Bake off but as soon as they started the whole “its my dying grandams recipe and she wants me to win” i was like nope turn it off. I am happy to chatch challenge, or genuine perseverance, but not emotional drama thanks. I quite like some of the dog adoption ones too.
