    My understanding was that tiling doesn’t allow overlapping windows, is that not the case?

    I am a complete novice at this, to be honest.

      Both kwin built-in tiling and most tiling wms include ability to make a window floating while other windows are tiled. Difference is in how window manager behaves by default, most popular environments float by default with ability to tile when needed. Tiling wms tile by default with ability to float when needed.

      As I’ve said in previous post you can try kwin tiling without any long configurations, there is a default layout so you can just drag a window with shift pressed and there would be highlighted area where it would tile.
