Carney said the equivalent dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs will focus on sectors such as dairy, steel, household appliances, farming equipment, electronics, and pulp and paper
Early Saturday, the United States imposed 50% import tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods.
In response, Canada announced plans to launch retaliatory measures starting Sept. 8, after final talks aimed at easing growing friction between the two long-standing allies broke down.
The duties introduced by Donald Trump impact roughly 5% of Canada’s annual exports across the border, affecting items as diverse as tongue depressors and hockey sticks.
Speaking from Ottawa, Carney stated during a 22-minute address to Canadians, “in the coming days, we will release the details of these new tariff measures, which will come into force the Tuesday after Labor Day.”

I don’t understand it, if US citizens have to pay the tariffs why does Canada feel the need to do the same to its citizens.
Canada is pivoting trade away from the USA. Why buy Teslas when they can buy BYD or Jaecoo from China or BMWs and Mercedes from Europe for instance.
Canada is America’s biggest market so any decision by the public to not buy american stuff will potentially hurt american producers more.
Also, American manufacturers rely on Canadian raw materials, so its a double whammy for them.
And all because MAGA still don’t get it.
Tariffs are to reduce demand, not to increase evenue. So, if they stop buying our stuff, we will stop buying theirs.
