I also think bulletin boards, forums and mailing lists would be more popular at a municipal level or for more niche subjects to fill the gap where it’s not interesting for the general population. For example, maybe you could look into the city’s local lemmy server (lol) to look for tabletop gaming groups, or subscribe to your friend’s mailing list if he discovers any interesting hobby projects (like, someone reverse-engineers MS-DOS). Advertising would still happen, but it would be voluntary.
