Avoiding US goods and services – from tech to whisky to air travel – has forced many to find a new way of living
This week the US imposed 50% tariffs on US$20bn (£15bn) of Canadian goods, and Mark Carney, the country’s prime minister, has vowed to match them “dollar for dollar” after the collapse of trade talks between the two countries last weekend. Donald Trump retaliated on Thursday by ordering the federal government to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America.
Such actions have added fuel to a widespread boycott of US products and services by Canadians that began early last year in response to the president’s trade war and threats to annex his northern neighbour.
More than 3,500 people from across Canada shared with the Guardian via an online callout how they have made changes to their lives in response to the US administration’s political and economic stance. Many expressed deep anger and sadness, but remained resolute that this was now a new way of living.

I am not the biggest fan of our current leader but I thought the statement made about the lake was good:
“The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means ‘the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,'”
“The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.”
See, Carney, and you and I, are rational. We use rational arguments. What when you debate an imbecile that not only does not care for the rules, but doesn’t understand them or even realize that they are there and what for, what is that quote about the pigeon?
Like, something to the effect of, playing chess with a pigeon, it doesn’t understand the rules, it shits all over the board, then struts around like it won.
I want to ask you, how do you deal with that, but the answer is obvious to the both of us so it’s superfluous and would get us banned.
In this case it would not get us banned, just let the pigeon sit in it’s own shit. Really, they are falling apart. I don’t think we could do anything to speed up their fall by getting involved.
Like russia nothing they say or sign is worth anything, so just let them piss their bed and prepare for if also like russia they decide to invade.
I was thinking shoot the fucking pigeon but hey, tomato potato.
My friend, they will take all of us down with them.
It’s like sitting in the back seat of a bus going, hey, what can we do about the drunk guy on PCP driving the bus? He’ll drive into a wall soon enough!
That never works, there are always more.
They said that about nazis too, and then we killed almost all of them.
I mean, there are ways to control any subset of a population with targeted… Yah fuck it I’m just gonna end the sentence there.
Oooof, bad news on that one… related though!
Yo by the way look at us creating content! Comments! Comtent!
You know antibiotics?
You have to take all the pills. You can’t stop just when you start feeling better, or it’s gonna come back, and resistant.
You know that puts the antivaxers in the states under a very different light…
