The Wing Commander movie by Chris Roberts (yeah, of Star Citizen scam artist fame).

It’s loosely based on his older Wing Commander games, and I think he funded it with some of the money Microsoft gave him to develop Freelancer.

It’s a deeply mediocre movie, but the soundtrack, in particular the main theme, was pretty darn good.

I’d argue that all Star Wars soundtracks are better than their associated movies. This is not necessarily to say that the movies are bad, though that can be debated, but the soundtracks are phenomenal.

    Oblivion

The movie itself is a boring holywood scifi (not actually bad, tho).

The soundtrack is a masterpiece by M83.

Somebody else noticed! Yeah that’s like the only Cruise film I ever paid attention to and it’s for that music.

Though I do like movies where characters have to sort out artificial memories

I haven’t actually seen Tron: Legacy, but I assume the film cannot possibly be as good as the Daft Punk album it came with.

It’s not. It’s a subpar plot and some questionable acting carried by gorgeous visuals and a stellar soundtrack.

It’s still my favourite movie of all time, but the soundtrack is stil better.

Is that the current state of film sequels? The sequel from ten to twenty years ago that we all thought was bad is not nearly as bad as the latest sequel, what has happened to films?!

Tron: Ares was not that bad either. The visuals were a clear upgrade from Tron: Legacy and a handful of clips I’ve seen from the original Tron movie. You can notice that that they put a lot of details in places like Ares’ HUD, consoles, the proprietary 3D printer and the virtual red-coloured world whose name I can’t remember right now.

The soundtrack does complement the movie, although I noticed that they repeated certain “melodies” across the movie more than I would’ve liked. It’s obviously not at par with Daft Punk but it resembles the spirit of the Tron franchise.

The plot is a real rollercoaster in terms of quality and believability. The backstory and plot of the main protagonists feel solid and so is the interaction between each other. Somehow Jared Leto decently fits the role of Ares and his dialogues don’t feel out of place or cringey. On the other hand, the story gives too much power to the antagonist to the point that it clearly feels unfair. Also some action scenes feel like they’re happening just because they have to, and probably give material for the trailers to give the viewers something to look forward to while watching the movie.

If you have no qualms with the involvement of Jared Leto, I would recommend that you give this movie a try. It’s certainly not a masterpiece, but it’s surprisingly well made for a movie that that considered a flop by the users at Lemmy.

Those “repeated certain melodies across the movie” have a name. It’s called a theme and is something that’s pretty common in movies, opera, musicals, symphonies, etc. An entire work can have a theme that is modified, built upon, expanded or changed as the narrative progresses. Individual characters or places can have their own unique themes. Daft Punk’s entire style is built on repetition, so it should be no surprise that their musical score work would highlight that.

1492: Conquest of Paradise. Very few people remember the movie (I still do and rewatch it regularly), but the soundtrack by Vangelis is an absolute banger.

In general, his soundtracks tend to be better than the movies. Alexander is another great example. Chariots of Fire and Bounty are fine movies, but still greatly enhanced by his soundtracks. Perhaps the only movie that stood on its own against a soundtrack by Vangelis was Blade Runner.

I am super proud to be late to the party and still have one useful submission: Flash Gordon, the 1980 hot mess that George Lucas passed on to make Star Wars.

The soundtrack is not the finest work by Queen, but is worth a tenth re-listen nonetheless.

Well the soundtrack is awesome. I love the movie very much as well though.

Another good 90s movie soundtrack is the one for Judgment Night. Same concept as the Spawn soundtrack, but with callaborations between hiphop and metal. I have not seen the movie though.

Note that this is not some sort of official soundtrack; rather, it’s apparently just a playlist of songs that appeared in the movie, uploaded by different users, which might mean that volume and encodings or maybe that versions are not consistent with those in the movie. I don’t see an official soundtrack on YouTube Music; one might never have been released.
