TIL why the Mona Lisa became so famous I’ve always wondered why the Mona Lisa is so admired when there are so many other famous paintings from the Renaissance. What surprised me is that its fame didn’t come from one single thing. Leonardo’s technique, the painting’s history, its connection with the Louvre, and especially the attention it received after the 1911 theft all played a role

The painting itself is great and all, but its history really makes it special. I do wish they’d clean the thing, though.

…and if you do a 180 you can see an amazing picture opposite it. People always gather in a huge crowd around the mona Lisa and you have that other one to look at all you want.

Even worse, in the wing opposite there are plenty of master pieces, and hardly a visitor in sight. Lots of guided tours only visit the wing with the Mona Lisa, the Venus of Milo and the two sculptures by Michelangelo.

That’s probably an understanding between the museum and the tour operators, keep the cattle in the main bits so the rest can breath in the other parts.

Yes, let’s not only reinforce the platforming of these select pieces of art by only featuring them on museum tours, but let’s also call everyone stupid enough to think a tour of the mustang will give you a tour of the museum “cattle”.

Yeah, that’s actually what made me curious about it too. I kept hearing about the Mona Lisa everywhere, and I started wondering what was really so special about that particular painting. There are so many valuable and beautiful paintings out there, so I wanted to understand why this one became that famous. That’s what made me look more into its history
