I like to think that dragons have some kind of electric conductive skin so gold against their skin would feel better than any other material cause it’s a great conductor.
It also flips the whole hoarding wealth behaviour on its head as a dragon would use gold for its properties while it’s mankind that hoards it because of its subjective value.
There was a Discovery Channel mocumentary about dragons, they were attracted to shiny because they ate platinum to catalyze the hydrogen they stored in air bladders to breathe fire.
