At least in the thrash scene, Anthrax gets shit on a lot for being part of the Big 4, however I fucking love them, even though they had a period where every release was dogshit. Their early stuff is peak thrash, which is good because nowadays they mainly stick to playing their early stuff. Still deserving of their position. Though sometimes I wonder if it should be a Big 5, including Exodus, who were one of the first.
Anthrax has some really great stuff. But as you said, you have too tread carefully through their catalog. When they are good, they are amazing… When they are bad, they are really bad.

Years ago I went to the Slayer farewell tour. There were a lot of bands that I had wanted to see for a long time: Testament, Behemoth, Lamb of God, and Anthrax.
In my opinion, Anthrax stole the show. I hadn’t listened to them much before that show, but on my way back home I played a lot from their catalog and realized I had been missing out.
Agreed. However the big 4 was never about the “best 4” bands, it was the “bestselling 4” or “gateway bands”. They should have been treat as the 4 bands to start out with, however people seem to think they are the best bands and therefore there is no point listening to other thrash🙄. Which couldn’t be further from the truth.
You literally never know what to expect with Anthrax and that’s pretty cool. It occasionally ends in a shitty album, but it usually ranges from at least interesting to a classic.
