The ID checking company said the data breach included people's full names and driver's licenses and other government-issued identity documents.

Any ID check more involved or more technological than the guy at the liquor store glancing at it and shrugging is a scam and a security hole.

For 150 million people, 10¢ is more likely, the judge wouldn’t want to do any actual monetary harm to them.

Damn why the fuck do they need to have that database?

I’m being completely serious here, sometimes I think they just amass the data so it can be stolen because if it can be stolen the headlines will imply it has “value” because none of this shit has inherent value in our hall of mirrors economy.

I’ve suspected the same. I hate using clichés, but the purpose of a system is what it does. So what does it tell us when there are weekly mass leaks of everyone’s medical information, bank account histories, social security numbers, locations, DMs, financial information and so forth?

And despite these constant digital attacks, hacks and leaks, the answer always seem to do nothing and keep cramming unnecessary AI or IoT bullshit everywhere that end up collecting more enormous amounts of private information to leak?

“We need to invest in cybersecurity to prevent another attack, also download our verification app.”

I’m beyond suspecting malice, I straight up assume the most malicious thing is whatever these techbro assholes are doing

Basically the FBI tactic. “Yes we were in contact with the shooter/bomber, now give us more money so we can stop more shootings/bombings [by getting more people entrapped in our wacky strategy of tension plot]”

This dataset only seems valuable for scams and abuse.

To sell it to data-harvesters, of course

Maybe IDScan wasn’t permanently storing the records and deleted each one after analysis, but their platform was so thoroughly hacked that the instant a record was uploaded it was copied by the hackers. Not that that makes the situation any better.

IDScan has not said how many individuals are affected but notes on its website that it holds over 150 million driver’s license records.

They certainly claim to be holding those records deliberately, as a selling point.

Have probably used it under a different name… Fortunately it’ll take a long time to try and scam 150 million people individually.
