My job’s premises just happened to be in the area - business unrelated - and the shortest route to the bus home passed through it.
It got to the point that some of them would - spitefully, deliberately, and in earshot - tell newcomers not to bother with me, because I refused so many times. I was never rude. Just a firm “no, thanks”. Apparently some didn’t take kindly to that.
