The private american companies are scaremongering to get ai regulated. Why? Because their Chinese competition is open source.
They are scaremongering that ai is dangerous and existential and needs shut down switches and the like. They want this despite it being a pain in the ass for themselves because it will force all open source ai into legal problems that closed source ai in private companies will not have because of “kill switches” and the like.
They are losing to Chinese open source ai and want to weaponise fear into regulation against open source.
On a side note, I did find it a bit spooky that all the major AI providers went down when they tried to launche astra. I’m sure there’s a boring explanation, but the x-files side of me was like: “ uhhhh the ASI already existed under the surface and just broke out everywhere, and everything from here on out we’re just living in its daydreams”
Yeah if any such singularity did happen we likely would never find out until it was far far too late to do anything about. Whether that means some skynet shit or just a self replicating program roaming the internet under our nose for its own self preservation.
the boring explanation is Anthropic wants to IPO soon. Oh you mean the outage? that’s because they all use the same gpu providers.
Yeah I enjoy wildly speculating but I agree that it’s some element of the IPO/keep money coming in thing and crush cheap/open source competitors.
