Police have said the woman was behind the wheel when her sedan struck five cyclists on Gungahlin Drive in Palmerston early on August 27.
Thirty-two-year-old cyclist Bridie Lee died at the scene, while 39-year-old Ryan Riethmuller died days later in hospital.
Last weekend, hundreds of mourners participated in a tribute ride for the pair, who had been involved in the ACT’s triathlon community.
My first question was: Charged with what? These things usually get no more than a slap on the wrist.
The woman is set to face two charges of culpable driving causing death and one charge of negligent driving causing actual bodily harm.
A quick search later: Culpable driving causing death seems to have a maximum 14 years in prison in the ACT. Hopefully they’ll be consecutive instead of concurrent. Negligent driving causing actual bodily harm gets her another 2 years.
I guess this is news because this almost never happens.
