It’s much less safe than it was and it’s fucked up, it is still monumentally safer than driving. People are shit at risk assessment when it comes to air travel.
I don’t drive either though, I cycle to get around. Which is harder to tell how dangerous it is because the health benefits are usually greater than the risks.

The U.S. still takes aerospace safety very seriously, which is why it’s so safe.
