Frieren’s fine. It’s flashy and charming with an overarching story to engage with, even in the absence of any understanding of the complex grief and nostalgia and existentialism. Kids engage like fern and stark and would probably feel safe and curious about the fleshed out world. Fine for 12+

Re zero, similarly, is just a very graphic story about self improvement. It’s, if anything, formative and gentle in its extreme horror. It’s The Diner at the End of the Universe, but Subaru is the cow. Fine for 14+ Imo. (I still consider that kids)

But I agree about berserk. A story about the burden of existence and healing told through nihilism, morbidity, betrayal, and rape is a little too heavy. “Nothing matters, but also fuck you.” That is too many conversations to have in one sitting, and something terrible will slip through the cracks. 17+

There’ll always be exceptions to the rule. But that’s a bit nitpicky, and denies the overwhelming intent, both in marketing and writing, to create stories for children. Is every one of them for kids? No. Are the tropes and agencies created with kids in mind? Mostly, yes.
