Evolution sucks. Look at the recurrent laryngeal nerve:
Instead of going 2 inches from your brainstem to your larynx, it goes all the way to your aorta, wraps around it, then back up. This serves absolutely no purpose and is like that because of random, gradual evolutionary changes.
Maybe its like a pcb data trace, needs to be a certain length to deliver signals in correct timing. That was just a convenient route to prevent tangles
