I long to live in a world where the future looks at someone like Bernie Sanders and thinks of him in the same way as we now think of FDR.
FDR is the best president the US ever had. And we can point to so many problems with FDR. The obvious being that in the context of history he would be considered a white supremacist and all that we consider “good” that he did was in the context of an America that was looking to reinvent slavery through the prison systems. A world that better men than him worked to change (but never became president).
I want to live in a future in which Bernie is seen in that lense. That we can deal with his late life liberal zionism and still see his influence something that radicalized and moved a large portion of the population to left.
Could we have had a better more perfect figure? Sure. But I’m getting older too. I am not trying to reach a better world for myself and screaming at old people that are clearly wrong. I’m trying to plant trees that I’ll never enjoy the shade of. Trying to be the best old fuck I can be; while acknowledging that the idea that someone as old as Bernie is literally beyond what I myself could strive to be at that age.
