The US saw Russia as a weak piece it could take off the board so that it could start plundering the resources the west needs, and surrounding China with proxy states from the west. It was basically spelled out here. And fucking Europe over is also very much a strategic requirement for the US. Since China is now at the centre of the global economy, Europe’s economic interests lie in the east. If the pre 2022 trends continued, then economic needs would also drive politics and Europe would eventually leave American orbit. Since the US can’t offer anything to Europe that would change that, the next best thing is to enact a scorched earth policy and burn Europe to the ground so nobody gets it.
