I don’t know much about skydiving but i think these days, they always do tandem jumps for someone’s first jump. Without groping.
always is a strong word. you should never use it 😂 there is lot of ways to do anything and parachuting is not just freefall. i did my first jump solo. with round canopy (they are far easier to control for a beginner than ram-air ones) with automatic opening.
