It definitely depends on what you want to do. For systems programming, HPC, embedded etc, Go is not an alternative to Rust. For webdev, I do get it, Go is much simpler.

The Syntax do be Lknda tricky, but its a great language with lots of great high level functionality. I can not really say anything about Go, since I never used or even read it.

        Doesn’t Go belong to google?

Also, why do you want to learn programming? (It is nice and fun to code, but the choice of a language may depend on your aim too)

It doesn’t “belong” to Google, but they are a major contributor.

I know why I want to program, and Go has everything I need to do that, and I also just quite like the language anyway.

Yeah, I know, I don’t trust Google as much as the next person; but I just don’t think they can really do what they’re doing with the AOSP to Go, I mean, Go is fully open-source, and doesn’t depend on Google for anything really.

If Google did try to pull something with Go, the language would just be forked. But I frankly don’t see what Google would get out of restricting Go. For a mobile operating system, it makes very good business sense, they can direct more users to their own app store to show them ads and get more revenue, but a programming language is a tool, not a commercial product (at least nowadways).

Nah. Rust is challenging to write because Rust is challenging to learn. There are a lot of concepts that exist in few if any other programming languages that you have to get your head around before you can write really any nontrivial Rust code.

When I started learning Lua, I already knew Python and Java. It took me about a week to pick it up before I was writing proper coroutines. When I started learning Rust, I really struggled, for over a month – Rust is a lot – but then everything just kinda clicked, and I got it, and suddenly the borrow checker was a wind at my back instead of something I would do daily battle with.

I am a twink, but I think that is entirely orthogonal to me being good at Rust. Anyone can pick it up. You just have to be very patient and very eager to learn.

Yeah I am primarly from c++/c#/ruby (rip) background and im currently trying to make a small game in rust bit I am having hard time with it, especially the syntax. I always felt I somewhat understood the whole ptr/ref/async and immutability until i touched rust.

I have used many languages in my experience but never did i encounter a language I find hard to remember basic stuff. I guess I just need to take some time to really learn it.

And yeah I am not abandoning, I do see the advantages and it does skip many (albeit c++ specific) headaches.

Also keep twink-ing, I heard its a gift for rust 🤣

Rust written by AI is funny.

      1. Ask Claude to write something in rust, hoping for memory safe code

      2. Complain that some parts are slow

      3. Look inside and see a ton of uncontained unsafe code

I absolutely hate how LLMs love Rust. Though it goes from its very design of ensuring safety at compile time, but at least System76, one of the most prominent adopters of Rust in Linux communities, didn’t join the dark side.

I say “yes”, with one exception: if they remove the offending code, the project (as a whole) is no longer tAInted.

And yeah; there are pure projects. NetBSD’s kernel is currently untAInted, but some things in the project (like GCC) are.

I find that to be a impossible standard to put on projects, and creates a community of distrust and accusations.

I found the discussion of Bevy’s AI policy to be quite nuanced and fair.

I hope you find projects that fit your requirements.

Yes; I was absolutely crestfallen when I caught wind of it being tAInted.

I’m currently investigating alternatives. Redox is anti-AI, but written in Rust. Haiku isn’t really suitable for most folks as a daily driver. ReactOS is basically a toy, and is tAInted anyways.

Of the BSDs, FreeBSD and OpenBSD are both tAInted; Hyperbola is still using Linux-Libre; NetBSD itself is untAInted, but uses GCC (if I recall correctly), and one of its forks, MirBSD, is in the same boat.

If I can build NetBSD using an alternative compiler toolchain, then that would be an excellent starting point for a new OS.

Zig is a pretty easy adoption if you’re good with C, it’s another (imo, better) memory-safe “modernisation” like Rust is. It’s not as mature as Rust yet, but it has C interop, and the Zig compiler is also a drop-in replacement for existing C code. Very nice language I must say.
