Yup, that’s how you turn your app completely irrelevant against a gargantuan adversary already well established and with much more freedom of use for free (with the exception of that sweet sweet data of yours). Why would anyone switch from a well-established network to a ghost town with severely limited features in their free-tier? Imo, our best bet for an IG alternative is still PixelFed.
I have lot many issues with the details
-
The table that shows the difference shows different reach for different tiers, but I don’t see how it is possible without introducing an algorithm.
-
The free version only gives you 1 post and 3 stories per day. The stories and posts have separate limits. I prefer a single limit for publications (stories + regular posts), since I don’t like stories and I do not use them.
-
Limiting comments is ridiculous: text is light, and you only get 5 comments in free tier.
-
The free version allows videos of only 10 seconds, which is completely useless, and the second tier is only 3 minutes."
This is another case of making free version completely
Sure, but have you seen the cost of bandwidth?
-
Wow, that is extremely stupid. They shot themselves in the foot before they even got off the blocks.
I wish loops would take off more
Right?!?
It has the same problem that the rest of the fediverse has in terms of spread, though: all the big tech players advertise the shit out of their platforms, and word of mouth can’t really meaningfully compete with that. Which is not to say that Loops/Lemmy/Mastodon etc should get advertised (or gag embed advertisements), but simply pointing out that big tech follows a VERY different playbook in terms of lifecycle compared to community/OSS projects.
Pixelfed anybody?
Trying to find the upside here Maybe with limits, people will be more considered in what they choose to post or comment, and the disinformation bots will be curtailed?
I don’t use monnet or instagram etc. but i wouldn’t hate either of those possibilities.
I do not mind the limits, but one post for the free tier is ridiculous, same as limiting how many people can follow you. It is pretty clear this is the typical strategy of making the free version so useless to try to make you pay for a higher tier, which generally backfires
