Over the years, the then-stewards tried to find ways to give that ship a new lease in life, anywhere from refurbishing and powering it up again for cruise to a floating hotel/casino, but to no avail as – except for a few enthusiasts – no one cared about its reputation of being the fastest and then-modern ocean liner on the planet until they were forced to sink it after failing to pay for docking, and only then mainstream attention got focused again.

Huge waste of resources. 53,000 Tons of steel and aluminum that could have been recycled.

It’ll make a neat reef and dive location. Also ship breaking is costly and dangerous.

Trump will order it renamed it to the SS Liberal or some other stupid shit before it sinks.

Jokes aside, this is sad. SS United States is a tremendous part of maritime history, and because of money, we literally have to destroy it. May as well have scrapped it back in the day and spat in the faces of those who tried to save it.

Misread. Thought the American-SS was about to sink the state of Florida. That didn’t seem right, since that’s like their headquarters.

I always admired her beauty when she was docked in Philadelphia for years. Very cool ship to see when walking out of Walmart.

She also has a great history. It’s quite sad (and very understandable) nobody bought her to refurb and turn her into a museum. She was for sale for $1 for as long as I can remember. Of course, the real cost is much much more with docking fees, needing to tow her anywhere.

And it was stripped inside, basically just a shell and bare decks. The cost to make it a useful venue of any kind was astronomical. It’s sad.

I’m worried about the NS Savannah. It is a nuclear powered civilian vessel, combination cargo and passengers, built under Eisenhower’s Atoms for Peace effort. The reactor has been removed, and she’s docked in Baltimore. The caretakers are desperately looking for a place to take her as a museum ship. (I did the tour a year or two ago, it’s really interesting.)

Yeah and right next to one of the few remaining Liberty Ships, the SS John W Brown.

When we visited the Savannah, the Dali (the ship that hit the Key Bridge and triggered its collapse) was anchored at the dock next to it. So I got a few pictures of that. And the missing bridge. :(

Can we rename it the TrunpShip and invite him for a cruise, and accept a peace prize?

or Florida finally sinks into the ocean. we know all about the rising sea levels, and hurricanes that florida seems to want to ignore. but the mouse’s property will stay afloat.
