So I was in a lecture and there were some guys in front of me. They looked back at my fanny pack which has a communist sticker on it, and grinned to themselves about it. I made eye contact with them. You could tell they were looking down on me. I don’t know why they couldn’t be normal about it and just disagree without making themselves feel superior. It triggered my self esteem issues a lot and I wish I said something.

I hate them smug people so much. But you gotta keep your cool, else you only feel worse. I speak from experience. I fear saying something wouldn’t have done any good.

Was it the libertarian debate-loving type? Because that’s who usually gets all smirky about Le AKSHUALLY gommunism rewards the lazy. Or claiming that “inheriting my grandpa‘s wealth is my own hard labor.” - god that one tested my entire spirit.

Practice your “we will not apologize for the terror” and “I am thinking about you going on Tito’s one way coal mine tour” face.

What I’ve gotten from some peers, other than puzzlement, is at times what I think is malevolent curiosity, oughtright dismissal, or being made fun of (like this one blond shitlib of the overachiever type I know).

I think the best way to deal with these types of people is to shoot them down, one way or another. Dismiss them, bore them to death, or make them embaressed that they even thought of doing what they did.

But that’s what we want to do, and sometimes we can’t. For now it’s best not to let them get to you, so that you can hopefully get back at them.
