I would bet money that seeing how Trump is doing right now is what made the difference. The Iran war is an international disaster and Bolsonaro was pretty tied in to trump. So if Trumps approval went down Bolsonaro might take a hit by proxy.

    …received 4.4m votes more than Bolsonaro, with a 51.79% share to his 45-year-old rival’s 48.21%.

A ~3.5 point margin; the popularity of far right ideology is scary right now…

Congrats to Brazil for remaining sane for another term.

A lot of people don’t think about it much, they just think “it’s an alternative to the current person in power, maybe it will work for the economy!”, while overlooking the giant red flags. Same reason why Milei won in Argentina.

most people IRL that I know, voted for Bolsonaro, have the stated that their main reason is “Lula is corrupt, PT is corrupt”

from what I have seen online, there is A LOT of people who genuinely believe that the annulment of Lula’s corruption charge was as conspiracy against opposition to PT and Lula, and that the inprisoment of Jair Bolsonaro was a continuation of this conspiracy, and widely claim that the elections are a fraud

Literal miracle. I was so expecting terrible news. Good for you Brazil.

Now hopefully Lula spends the next few years, well governing well of course, but also grooming new candidates to succeed him. Younger candidates. Don’t want this to be a one-off. Got to build that next generation.

Same. Especially when most parties did not endorse lula, some say they will stay neutral and other sided with Bolsonaro

Speaking as a Brazilian who voted in Lula - not because I necessarily think he’s the best, just the least worse - this final term of his will most likely be his worst. The congress and senate that was elected this year is atrociously far-right, most from the same party as Flavio. Lula won’t be able to accomplish anything; at best he’ll be able to hold the status quo until 2030 - which is good considering with Flavio we’d very likely have loss of rights and setbacks - and hopefully by then we’ll have more reasonable candidates from the right, and maybe a better one than Lula in the left.

Honestly, his next government just needs to do two things: investigate and prosecute everyone involved in manipulating the elections; curb the influence and heavily regulate social medias here in Brazil. If they can do these two things, we’re golden, we don’t even need a direct successor.

Of course you do. One because Lula might have won but everything else was basically swept by the right wing so none of that investigation or prosecutions are going to make a whole lot of headway. But more importantly a power vacuum is a terrible idea. Because that’s basically guaranteeing a right-wing resurgence.
