It’s to distinguish from snow or water. It’s pulled from a Forest Service publication. I’m less sure it’s a super useful datapoint to expose on whatever site this is.
Good catch. Years of reading trail descriptions and I never noticed that before. I pulled up some other USFS trail pages and they have the same text.
