Are you in the US? If so, many states allow servers and bartenders to be paid less than min wage… $2.13/hr in some states currently, which is the same rate I was paid 37 yrs ago when I was a waiter. While most states now require the wages + tips have to meet or exceed min wage with the employer making up the difference, $7.25 isn’t enough for anyone to get by these days and if employers have to make up the difference, they’ll fire the employee because they assume they suck if they’re aren’t getting tips

Oh I’m in California so it’s a little different. In some states yeah, it’s fundamentally how service workers even afford to live
