The social networking site is facing criticism for blocking access to the site, which identifies thousands of ICE agents and other employees working for Homeland Security.
Yeah, but joining an instance is so hard guys. How am I supposed to know which one to join? What if I join the wrong one? The human brain was never meant to know more than one domain name.
The whole Internet should just be one single website so I don’t have to think. But I will complain about how only one rich guy owns that website, but I’ll do it on that website since it’s the “public square”.
You can have a gmail.com address, and send and receive emails between yahoo.com and hotmail.com addresses without issues. Nobody really cares which provider you chose, and if you really want to, you can register your own domain and host email yourself.
If this doesn’t land, then the person you’re talking to probably has never used a computer.
That’s where I’m not 100% sure. Either each instance maintains a copy of the public square, or there is no public square each piece of content is hosted on one instance and viewable from other instances

I want a decentralized democratic system but the only way to get there is to centralize power and give it to one entity!

I think it’s better to explain instances as phone booths or conference rooms.
That’s an awful comparison.
It’s like email.

Okay thank you
and just like with email if you choose the wrong domain you can’t send messages to people on mainstream domains without it being sent to spam.
But they are just different entraces to the same “public square”: the fediverse

The bluesky conference room is muting participants in the conference call
