Bear in mind that literally nobody – nobody – had Iran as their top 20 issue going into the 2024 election.
Yet here we are.
Republicans start wars. Democrats tend to end them.
It was actually one of their main points they Kamala wants to start world war 3. Iran was a huge part of the election campaign in 2024.
Vote democrat -> war with Iran and world war 3
Vote Republican -> no new wars, wars will end
This and cost of living with that beautiful word groceries were central to the campaign.
Don’t forget Krasnov claimed in 2011 that Obama would start a war with Iran. The fuckers project at every turn. (Can’t link the original video; Trump deleted it.)
My grocery bills are double what they were in 2019 now, and I actually buy less.
If you’re wondering why people are so pissed off, it’s because so many of us are making better money than we ever have and it actually buys nothing.
My grocery bills are double what they were in 2019 now
Rocket Mortgage has a commercial that shows some schlub walking into his house with his groceries while the voiceover says something about how those three bags of groceries used to be six. Then the house starts talking to him, reminding him that he can cash in the tiny amount of equity he has in the house with a second mortgage and use the money to buy groceries. Happy schlub dances the rest of the way into the house.
It must be hundreds of thousands of people that have been conned by this one commercial alone into thinking that going into debt to buy groceries is a solution to their problems.
I was super lucky and able to get debt free (except for my mortgage) in 2022.
RM bought my mortgage last year, and yes, they’re relentless with the stupid ads. They’re begging us to take out debt, even if we don’t want or need it. They’ve even inflated their “estimated value” of my home on their website to try and entice me.
Sucks that things have gotten so shitty that taking out debt to buy food seems reasonable. I wish we could elect better people, but if we get these two dozen or so DSA’s elected, maybe?
Bingo, at one point in my career I doubled my salary by interviewing for a new position.
I counter offered and they matched, I was literally sweating when waiting for the response. I thought finally my financial issues are over. I was born into poverty, in my family I was the first to graduate highschool let alone go to college.
Here we are 5 years later and I’ve slowly found myself in the same position as then. Except now there is no larger salary jump to be made because AI has fucked up the job market so bad, even getting into interviews is nightmare for a higher paying job, despite being fully qualified.
Worked hard my entire life just to end up with basically the same financial hardships I had 15 years ago.
The October 14 Consumer Price Index showed that overall, prices for goods and services across the United States have risen 3.7 percent over the last 12 months, exacerbated by massive increases in energy costs. Gasoline shot up a punishing 34.2 percent and fuel oil (primarily used by consumers in residential heating) has skyrocketed 74.2 percent, driven in large part by oil and gas trade disruptions stemming from the United States and Israel’s war in Iran.
“That paints a dreary picture for Americans struggling with high costs, who likely won’t feel any relief at the pump in the near future — especially as more potential military action looms [in Iran],” Business Insider reported on Monday.
It’s a pretty cheerful picture if one’s primary concern is carbon dioxide emissions.
There are three ways that carbon dioxide emissions come down:
-
Voluntary limiting of use. I am pretty confident that this isn’t going to be a dominant factor, based on how people have acted en masse thus far.
-
Government rationing or similar restrictions on access to fossil fuel. I don’t think that this is terribly politically likely.
-
Price increases on fossil fuels. This is what’s been happening.
Now, I don’t know for how long those price increases will persist. But if you want less carbon dioxide emissions, you basically want one of #1, #2, or #3 to happen, and I think that #3 is probably going to be the most-realistically-plausible scenario.
My brother’s in-laws last winter were paying almost $2000 a month to heat their (overly large and mostly uninsulated) old house with oil. I can’t even imagine how crushing this winter is going to be for them.
Now, I don’t know for how long those price increases will persist
Years. We’re not getting out of Iran for years. There’s no reason to think this forever war is going to be any different than the forever wars of the past, because remember, the Democratic majority’s response when they had the opportunity to vote against it was: “Welp, we’re in it, so now we have to fund it.”
And the billionaire oil barons and war profiteers are making the decision makers generationally wealthy.
I don’t think that Trump is going to get an AUMF for it. His own party didn’t give him one with a trifecta in place. I saw quotes from multiple clearly-unhappy Republican legislators talking about how it’d be very difficult for Trump to get one, given that he didn’t consult with them prior to kicking this off.
I mean, I wouldn’t give Trump one either, certainly not with Hegseth as SecDef.
And if the Republicans aren’t going to give him one, then I’d say that the chances of the Democrats doing so are considerably less.
Thing is, though, I think that that’s more likely to extend it. Like, the American military rolling in in force would end the situation, but if that doesn’t happen…shrugs Iran doesn’t have much reason to stop. I don’t know who else would go in and use force.
I don’t think an AUMF really matters anymore.
If the disruption is temporary, it’s bad.
High prices will massively incentivize expanding fossil fuel production, which is exactly what is happening worldwide.
But the oil wells in the Middle East haven’t gone away. That oil will still make it to the atmosphere, sooner or later, and we will end up with an expanded production capacity.
Additionally, war is a terrible emitter.
Your scenarios aren’t wrong, but thing is they are all just temporary symptoms. The oil crises would need to be sustained, indefinitely, to stop those reduced consumption patterns from rebounding.
I’m actually okay with limited plastic production. that shit’s useful.
Trump’s Green New Deal will force yankees to switch to electric.
Suuuuuuure it will.
Do you think people will just bleed themselves dry for gas that’s only going to get more expensive?
How many people still drive full size trucks for no reason?
that’ll work until there’s no electricity left for the commoners.
You’re right, we need that electricity for data centers.
Yankees can ride their bikes or walk.
nope. if an american touches a bicycle it literally explodes. if they see a train they have a seizure, like the vampires from the ‘firefall’ books but for anti communism.
