First they made old reddit log-in only. I tried logging in but they locked me out because of my VPN. So I’ve been lurking on the shittier UI. Now they’re gonna force log ins on that too? I won’t be able to use it!

Every public website is moving to log-in only experience because of ai scrapers, which make it super trivial to scrap websites for data. These dumb ai bots are also super inefficient and just soak up all your bandwidth and cpu. IP blocks don’t really work for long, so if you require logged in users only, then you can block via user at least to try to frustrate ai and make it more expensive.

Reddit needs to move to a “containment experience” where users, once logged in, are longer allowed anywhere else on the internet.

I will never understand why porks hate their own business, and all of their products.

Porky when his website gets traffic boowomp

Porky when you don’t want to make an account to read a bloody soup recipe. boowomp

I find it difficult to believe that daily active unique users rose 12% YoY if they’re also forecasting that their total DAUs will drop by a small double digit percent in Q4 this year.

Related to people dropping the site, I don’t understand how anyone can use the new reddit interface, it sucks so much ass it’s amazing. Whose genius idea was it to make default sort include posts from months or even years ago?

I dunno dude, that site has been actively trying to harm itself for a decade. They have backed into success and they keep trying to figure out ways to tank the money printer and nothing works. Every shitty UI update is almost carefully crafted to kill its userbase, people are just slop goblins I guess.

“Pretty much all of the major ad-based platforms have gone through this transition. We are excited and moving quickly,” the CEO added, noting Reddit’s intent to become a “direct daily habit for every Internet user.”

:stallman-shining: Every proprietary program seeks to imprison its users, there is no exception.

Also this seems to also be another boon to chatbots who now can just spit out reddit forums to you exclusively.

Critical support to reddit in their continued efforts to kill reddit.

Deleted my account a couple of years ago and have been using the 3rd-party frontends to keep up with the few subreddits I cared about, but even those are either dying out or turning into toxic crap. It feels like visiting a youtube comments section without the video.

The day RedReader stops working for opening Reddit links, is the day Reddit joins the same shitlist with Facebook, Twitter and the rest, and earns a permanent block on my DNS blocklist.

I cannot say this doesn’t sadden me though, as I used to contribute a lot back in the day. I still remember the days Reddit was even open source.

  • is this just them admitting to it publicly? because this feels like it’s been the case for a few years, at least. i rarely even look at it anymore. the api/3rd party app shut off was pretty much it for me, so i nuked my account and overwrote my posts with garbage text. i noticed how incessantly it kept trying to force a login. also, it’s been very militant about connecting through VPN ips.

reddit is gonna be for tech-incurious, covid-denying genXers the way facebook steadily became the social media parking lot for lead poisoned boomers.

i’ll miss the sopranos sub, which i still check a few times a year for a laugh. anyone else realize Phil Leotardo did 20 years in the can? Commendatori!

He did 20 fucking years. Let me tell you a couple of three things. Forget myspace, forget facebook and definitely forget reddit.

This explains why it seems like they’ve been actively fighting Redlib lately. Every loophole forks have been trying was patched less than 24 hours later, to the point that the only way to use it is a fork that takes a real session cookie, which feels like it somewhat eliminates the point.

We must remember that Reddit was basically worthless company before the AI boom. It’s only true value it had was a largeish userbase, that was also easy to shill and vote manipulate. When started to rise they started scraping the shit out of reddit for free. Then reddit put the walls around the garden and a toll booth at the gate. That is what made them profitable They don’t much care about the actual userbase, i guess they rely on the fact that too many people are too invested in their communities to leave and will keep generating them free training data forever. rn scraping without paying is seen as the bigger threat to their business model.
