of course lottos are a statistician’s joke, but its still fun to imagine you’d do with that kind of capital. Sort of like imagining what a could have done with the Unitary Executive Theory

Right now the Jackpot is $1.3B, the cash value is $589M. You’ll get to keep about 30-40% of that, given that nobody else gets the jackpot too. Being conservative, that’s around $180M.
First I would just walk away from my current life. I would get a nice hotel room in a nearby city. Get a PO box and change my number. I would first be a good capitalist and figure out how to protect it by spreading it among less risky denominations. The dollar is cooked for the foreseeable future. I would have a hard time trusting banks on the long term. During 2008 there were banks that quietly froze certain transactions, even for wealthy customers. With my luck we would get the worst crash in US history the day after I deposit the winnings.
I would start working on dual citizenship in other countries or at least trying to get some kind of long-term visa. That way I’m just a plane trip away from getting out.
I would spend a lot of time traveling around the US, staying in major cities for months at a time. Holiday vacations in different places. I’ve experienced winter in Miami already. I would try Christmas at some lodge in the rockies, autumn in NYC, 4th of July in Alaska. Stuff like that. Soak up experiences and sights. After that I would start traveling abroad and looking for somewhere to settle. Of course, China is super tempting and would definitely be a place to visit.
When do I start funding American militant leftist organizations? I don’t know. First is how the money changes you. It has to change you, right? I wouldn’t change overnight but 6 months later, a year, 5 years? I would love to say I am intrinsically leftist but I’m not. I don’t think anyone is. I wasn’t always a leftist so what does happen can happen. I can become not leftist again. In that case it makes sense to get rid of the money as soon as possible. I definitely didn’t earn it. Lottery money comes from poor people spending their last few bucks on tickets. It’s still exploitation.
I have some ideas for community building and it would be enough money to hire experienced members of leftist orgs as consultants. My problem with giving it directly to an org is that regardless of how leftist they are, non-profits work like companies. They’ll want to use it to expand, the cost of expanding will come first with the hopes that they’ll be big enough to carry out real projects in a few years. I’d rather just be the mostly silent backer of real projects directly. It would give me something to do other than be a treatler.
