    Because Madagascar is a former French colony. They also have a conflict over some islands in the Pacific. The article said the former president cut a deal with Macron and was then evacuated, the deal could be about those islands but I doubt the new government would respect it.

      What deal could an ousted president make that the incumbent government could be convinced to honor?
