Is texting your buddy that you want to kill someone considered a death threat legally speaking? Ive texted my friends many times that i want certain people to die. I dont think that would hold any substance in court.

i want certain people to die.

You want them to die, or you want to kill them.

And is your buddy a convicted gang land criminal?

      Context matters.

Sounds like malice aforethought to me.

Unless, you’re just talking vaguely about public figures that are doing awful things, it’s kind of fucked up to be talking about wanting someone dead. It’s one thing to hope Putin gets cancer and dies before Christmas. It’s another to want the annoying middle manager die in a car wreck on the way home. Still another to say you’re to stab that asshole if he bumps into you in the hall one more time.

Wishing death on someone isn’t a healthy way to deal with your feelings.

I guess death wishing is a spectrum like so many things yeah. The desire doesnt come from the heart in my case, more of a "man things would be much simpler if “insert political figure” was dead.

Oh, yeah. That’s totally normal. I feel that way about many politicians, CEOS and “influencers”. I just wouldn’t talk like that about people I know or interact with.
