This was a mid-afternoon march with the Unions. It was peaceful and respectful until ICE got insecure and decided to be dicks about it. No warnings either.

My friend who attended said, “a daytime protest 5-10k strong organized by unions consisting of liberals, moms, teachers, nurses, and many many children and old people lead to a completely unprovoked onslaught of pepper bullet, flash bangs, and an absolutely astonishing amount of tear gas. It was terrifying, with that many people we were in serious danger of a stampede or being crushed. My eyes started to water and I got separated from my mom so I doubled back to find her, and suddenly the gas was so thick I couldn’t see at all, I felt like I was gonna shit my pants and throw up.”

Obviously law enforcement, apparently (according to other comments) federal - which would include ICE - did this.

Just for the record, they aren’t really paramilitary. Security services that are militarized yes. Paramilitary will be like proudboys and 3 percenters and their ilk as they are tooled by the admin to persecute their opponents, critics, etc.

Just for the record, the proudboys, 3 percenters, etcetera are giving 47 days of training to join this non military arm of the regime.

      A definition from merriam-webster.

This term paramilitary can take in a wide range of organizations, but is usually applied to forces formed by a government. Groups opposing a government, even when organized along military lines, are more often referred to as guerrillas or insurgents. In countries with weak central governments (such as, in recent times, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, or Congo), warlords may form their own paramilitary forces and take over all local police and military functions. Paramilitary often has a sinister sound today, since it’s also applied to groups of off-duty military or police personnel who carry out illegal violence, often at night, with the quiet support of a government.

And another definition from Encyclopædia Britannica,

group or organization that operates outside a country’s formal military structure. Paramilitaries are typically modeled after military organizations and may have similar training and equipment.

Both of those explanations back my interpretation up. I know you guys all call them that, it’s not accurate, just as is was not accurate for everyone to call Au Saun Su Kyi Myannamars “de facto” leader, she was the de jure leader, a leader in law not fact, not opposite that in the former.
