      If you wanna practice Chinese especially you’d best avoid BJ and SH

      Can confirm, learning this the hard way. Coming to a top Chinese university will mean that your local peers will be among the top students in the country, and thus they usually won’t have the free time to connect with foreigners.

      imo Tier 1 cities are fine for practice once you are at an intermediate level, but yea as a beginner it can be way too easy to take the path of least resistance

      EDIT: I didn’t really consider what unaware said in terms of classmates, that’s different than just local interactions and is a good point
