Iran executed at least 1,639 people last year, the highest number recorded there since 1989, two non-governmental organisations say.
The total represents an increase of 68% compared to 2024, when 975 executions were recorded, according to a report by Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) and Paris-based Together Against the Death Penalty (EPCM).
Most of those hanged were convicted of drug-related offences or murder, they say. But at least 57 were convicted of security-related charges, including two protesters.
The NGOs warn that Iranian authorities could use executions even more extensively this year in the wake of January’s protests and the war against the US and Israel.

Recorded where?
From the article this is their source document : https://iranhr.net/media/files/2025_Annual_Report_on_the_Death_Penalty.
So basicly nor record at all and most likely assumptions. I am not defending the Iranian government what so ever, I hate them more than anyone. But all this bullshit info coming out of a country that is just as cut off to the rest of the world as North Korea, I wouldn’t trust anything coming out from that place right now.
Page 6 clarifies this also includes executions from oficial sources. Given the downward trend of percentage of officially admitted executions vs total, you could extrapolate the data and conclude it should be more or less correct, or at least don’t have a major error.
Also, keep in mind, the report is from 2025, whole the complete internet shutdown is 2026.
I’m not saying they report is 100% correct. I’m not an expert in the topic, and only gave it a quick overview, but I’m surprised at your quick dismissal of it. You couldn’t spend 2 minutes to read the BBC article with the source link, but did spend enough time to read and negate the actual report, or at least their methodology?
funny the time some people seem to have, and how it magically appears and disappears…hmmmm… I’ll leave the speculation on motivation to brighter bulbs than my own…
