Not all of the rioters were, but the leaders of the student protestors were. The protests had a wide range, from people protesting Reform and Opening Up, to the students who were protesting it for not going far enough and liberalizing the economy. Either way, the rioters failed, and modern Chinese citizens are happy that they did.
